Westgate Ports hits its straps

The first quarter of 2008 has seen Westgate Ports undergo a transformation as staff numbers escalate, the construction project passes new milestones and investment in new technology and equipment grows.

Westgate Ports has recently employed four administration staff, five forklift operators and three truck drivers. We also now have 19 subcontractor truck drivers permanently engaged with the operation. This represents phenomenal growth in a short period of time - and this is just the beginning.

New to Westgate Ports are Andrew Smith, Karlie Story, Zeljka Cvetko and Ben Walker who have all joined to strengthen the ranks of the operations and administration team. We also welcome Lenny Smith, Tim Morelli, Keith Rowan, Willy Conway and James Pfannenschmidt. They make up our forklift and reach stacker team, which provides forklift operations 24 hours a day five days a week.

Also new to Westgate Ports is Ergan Hassan, Steve Freeman and Kanstantsin Melinikau. They join our team of truck drivers who operate the super B-double port precinct vehicles that transport import and export containers between the international terminal and our port operations at Victoria Dock.

The integration of the state-of-the-art MAXimas transport management software into our Westgate Ports Services operations is now fully deployed. The first phase of the new technology is due to go live in mid-May, enabling our clients to communicate and book job requests on line and allows us to track our trucks via GPS and provide in cab terminals for truck drivers to capture and record activity in real time.

The capability of this software puts Westgate Ports Services at the forefront of the industry in the provision of service and technology. This technology is critical to the anticipated growth of the operation.

Our investment in technology is matched by that in equipment, with two new side-loader trailers expected to be rolling off the production line in May. These units are much anticipated and will add capacity and efficiency to our delivery fleet and operations.

Our transformation is attracting attention around the port, especially as on-site construction activity gathers momentum. The piling of our 17,000m2 warehouse is now complete while the frame is currently being erected. Phase 1 of the hardstand for the rail siding and transport operations is also well advanced and is due for completion in July. The new Westgate Ports offices are due for completion in September.
